Covelo is made up of 14 parishes on very varied and rugged terrain. Deep valleys, rivers, mountains, especially high in the northeast, with heights of over 1000 metres go to form the most beautiful and varied landscape.
The highest point in the entire province of Pontevedra is the source of the
Tea river in the municipality of Covelo, the Faro de Avion (1,155 m). The River Tea flows down the Tea Valley, diagonally dividing the municipal territory. Along its
journey it is fed by numerous streams of crystalline water, full of animal and vegetable life. Its waters are full of mountain trout (smaller than the calm water variety), otters and other species rare to other ecosystems have also been seen. The combination of wild areas, appropriate to such high land (
Serra do Suído and Serra do Faro), contrasts with the fertility of the small valleys and woods of the lower lying areas. These peaks are examples of high mountains in their natural state only a few kilometres from the city. The Tea woods are a type of forest mainly consisting of oaks and native deciduous trees. The woods located in the upper Tea are the most extensive and best conserved in the province of Pontevedra, and some of the most important in Galicia. The level of production has intensified to preserve this natural heritage from uncontrolled logging that creates heavy soil erosion and the loss of a rare ecosystem. The land is full of wild boar, roe deer, small carnivores, otters, birds of prey, woodcock, lapwings, wild cats and other species that find their ideal habitat in these forests. The River Tea was declared “Natural Area of General Protection” by the Council of Agriculture, Cattle and Mountains. The Sierra del Suído figures in the Complementary and Subsidiary Regulations for the Planning of the Province of Pontevedra as a Natural Reserve. From the Pico de Avión, Xuarquiña, Lomba da Serra, Chan de Lama, Coto Bidueiros, Portiño Oscuro, you can see the most beautiful views in the municipality. In addition from the Sierra de Fontefría to the south on the border A Cañiza there are incredible landscapes, ideal for fans of mycology.
From the heights we can see valleys that seem to be cut into rectangles and painted in different shades of green. Some of the native forests, as we can see from the peak of A Guía de Piñeiro, are ideal places for leisure.
The evolution of the municipality has been notable in this aspect. As far as nature goes, Covelo already contains unique places of natural beauty, such as the
Tea river, which diagonally divides the municipal terrain, and the Tielas Valley. Along the course of the river we find the Fragas del Tea, which is an example of a forest, composed of oaks and native deciduous trees. These woods, located in the upper Tea are the most extensive and best conserved in the province of Pontevedra, and some of the most important in Galicia. The level of production has intensified to preserve this natural heritage from uncontrolled logging that creates heavy soil erosion and the loss of a rare ecosystem.
